Gerald Cody is a native of Cornelia, Georgia. He graduated cum laude from Piedmont College in 1979 and earned his law degree from Woodrow Wilson College of Law in 1982. He was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia that same year and began practicing law at McDonald & Cody with founding partner Doug McDonald, Gus McDonald’s father. Gerald has been with the firm ever since.

For more than four decades, Gerald has focused on representing individuals seriously injured through the negligence of others, and families of individuals who have died as a result of that negligence. His practice covers personal injury, motor vehicle accidents, commercial trucking accidents, and wrongful death. He recovered more than $15 million for clients in 2016 alone. In 2016, Gerald and Gus McDonald set recovery records in multiple Georgia courts. That work included a $3.4 million verdict that set the record for one court in the region, and additional record recoveries in two more counties that same year.
Gerald has litigated cases in state and federal courts across Georgia. He has handled criminal and civil jury trials, bench trials, and appeals in the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Georgia. He has appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit.
Gerald also continues to serve as a Guardian ad Litem for children who have been abused or removed from their homes. He was selected for the inaugural class of Leadership, Habersham County. He is a deacon at the largest church in Habersham County and has deep roots in this community that stretch back generations.
